As I stand on the steps of Dodd Auditorium, I wait for incoming first year students to come move in and begin the best four years of their lives. Being an Orientation Leader, most students come to either me or my 25 other colleagues for questions and/or advice.
A common question we receive is “What is there to do in Fredericksburg?”. I immediately become astonished as I think to myself ‘What ISN’T there to do in Fredericksburg?’. I stumble over my words while trying to compile all the thoughts in my head of what to do here. The question did get me thinking though; what are my favorite things to do in this small, historical, college town? I decided to put this list together of my top five favorite things to do here and post it on this blog. Disclaimer: this was a difficult list to put together! There are so many cool and interesting things to do here, and narrowing it down to five was literally exhausting.
Let us begin.
5. Visit the Historical Sites

Being the forefront for the Civil War, Fredericksburg has dozens of historical landmarks. One for example being the home of Mary Washington, hence the name of the local university: University of Mary Washington. There are so many to be studied here that UMW has created a Historic Preservation Major, designed to study and preserve historical sites. This major is only offered at very select universities around the country.
4. Antiquing and Thrifting in Downtown

Downtown Fredericksburg is littered with antique shops. Some two stories tall while some no more then 500 sq./ft.. Ever since Macklemore’s Thrift Shop was released, the thrifting business has boomed. Antique shops in Fredericksburg are filled with Civil War memorabilia, old sports collectables, and much more.
3. Swimming in the Rappahannok

We like to welcome the warm weather with a pilgrimage to the Rappahannok River. Here you’ll find the local Frednecks and their families, college students, and dogs. Many will pack a picnic and spend all day here, soaking in the glorious sun rays.
2. Bench Sitting

Note: this is not to be confused with sitting on a bench! According to Urban Dictionary, Bench Sitting is an activity specific to the University of Mary Washington. While bench sitting on college walk, it is easy to watch the world go by. Many sit here and people watch, ponder life, and if with a pal, discuss this past weekends activities (or what you can remember of it).
1. Spending the day at The Griffin

This secluded bookshop is nothing short of spectacular. You wouldn’t tell by it’s dinky entrance that this garden was hidden in the back. On Saturdays, one of my favorite activities is to visit the farmers market and then meander over to The Griffin where I’ll buy a coffee and read, study, or just hang out.
For those of you freshman reading this, do not take my spot at the Griffin. But as you can see there is plenty to do in good ‘ole Fredvegas. All you need to do is wander around and see what you can find.
For now, Cheers!
