How To: Economically Survive Irish Pubs

The Irish do not take breaks… In the United States, you could spend a decent amount of money on the weekends, but economically recuperate over the week, and be ready for next weekend. In Ireland, they go out seven nights a week, and that can become very costly and detrimental to your bank account. However, your nights out don’t have to run you $50! There are definitely ways to save money while drinking. Here are some ways I like to keep my budget.

Utilize Karaoke/ Open Mic Nights

Open Mic nights are Gods gift to the frugal drinker! Often times, bars will offer a free pint to those who show their vocal skills and, trust me, you don’t need to be a great singer. If it’s that bad, use the classic excuse of being too drunk and nobody will think twice about it. If you’re that worried about it, get a few of your mates together and get up there and sing like you’ve never sung before.

If you don’t know where the open mic/karaoke nights are, ask your hostel receptionist, they’ll typically know.

Pub Crawls

Easily one of the best ways to see the night life of a new city! Pub Crawls are offered all over the world, often by more than one organization in a single city. A small one time fee will usually get you entrance into the bars visited, and either a free drink at each bar or specials (i.e. 2 for 1 or 1/2 off). Not only will it save you money, but pub crawls are great ways of meeting new people!

Once again, ask your hostel receptionist, they’ll be able to point you in the best direction!

Only Carry How Much You’re Willing to Spend

If I’m trying to stop myself from spending too much money, I only bring out with what I’m willing to spend, and nothing else. Especially not cards, where I’ll be able to take out more money. When I’m out, I’m out, and that’s it! That doesn’t mean my night’s over, but it means I’m done buying drinks.

Pick and Chose Your Nights Out

hungoverJust because the Irish go out seven nights a week does not mean you need to! Their livers have been bred to handle it. The last thing you want is to burn out, economically and physically. Pace yourself, and enjoy the nights that you do choose to go out.
