Check Your Large Carry On For Free

avoid-extra-charges-common-airline-baggage-fees-and-luggage-size-restrictions-1395704809I’m sure you are all well aware that with every international flight, you are allowed one checked bag, one carry on, and one personal item, all free of charge. But, almost every time I’ve flown, the attendants have made an announcement prior to boarding something along the lines of “Due to our plane being full today, we are offering to check any large carry on items free of charge.” If you’ve got a large carry on, that may be a burden and you can live without it on the flight, take this opportunity! It’ll free up space and save you money by not checking it in the first place.

  1. Just make sure to take your passport and travel documents out! Last time I was at border control I saw an unfortunate man who had gate checked his bag with his passport inside, and had no way to get to baggage claim to retrieve it. Oops.

  2. Sadly, several airlines are talking about charging for carry on bags because passengers keep bringing on oversize bags that should be checked in. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us.. :/

      • There has been a lot of speculations about it for years. Sprit does it and I think frontier started rolling out fees last year. While I don’t think major airlines would go that extreme, anything is possible. It just takes a few people to ruin it for the rest of us. On a side note, I think American based airlines are more likely to adopt the european airlines way by charging larger fees at the door for oversized carry on bags. I think that is fair. It sucks to be the last people to board and not have bin space because someone was trying to cheat the system.
